The Next Trillion

I read something interesting the other day that I wanted to share with you. Dr. Paul Zane Pilzer, a world renowned economist and a professor at NYU, makes a good point in his book "The Next Trillion." Dr. Pilzer talks about doctors, nurses, pharmaceutical companies, and other professions that represent the medical profession are not in the health and wellness industry. If you consider the conditions under which you seek the help of these types of companies and how they stay in business, these professions actually represent what Dr. Pilzer refers to as "the sickness industry." The success of people in these professions are dependent on your sickness, not your health. Of course no one goes into medicine to hurt people, but they end up making a living on account of your sickness.

Consider this example. A pharmaceutical company holds a board meeting to decide how to spend research money for the upcoming year. They can choose from funding research for a CURE for diabetes which will cost a consumer one set price of $1000/pill to be CURED of diabetes, or they can fund research for a new drug that will TREAT diabetes and the consumer pays on average $3/day for the rest of their life to TREAT their illness. Which drug do you think the pharmaceutical company is going to spend its money on to fund the research? Exactly, ladder of the two. Like it or not, EVERY company's main objective is money...profit. And it is actually in their best interest that you remain sick.

Why am I sharing this hypothetical scenario with you? This is just one reason why the wellness and nutritional industry WILL reach a trillion dollars in the next decade. People are learning how to be more pro-active when it comes to their health. Today, over half of Americans currently take nutritional supplements. This number will only grow as we learn more about the benefits of vitamins and antioxidants.
